… 500th post! Yay!
For the past few days, I’ve been wondering what to write about in my 500th blog post. Should I write about something festive? I mean, 500 is a number worth celebrating after all! What about something random? That is how most of my posts come about after all…
I started this blog on January 2, 2010. Now, one year and a little over 7 months later, I’m writing from Brisbane, Australia – halfway done my first year in medicine. Amazing.
So many things have changed in such a short amount of time, but only for the better. I’ve grown so much as a person and everything I’ve been experiencing is only pushing me towards a goal I’ve set out to do.
Just a few days ago I had the chance to accompany a Director of ICU at a private hospital for nearly 6 hours. In that amount of time, I had the chance to meet all his patients, learn of their procedures, look at their imaging, and perform some patient examinations. On top of that, I got to see procedures including an angioplasty and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) – I didn’t even know TOE existed! I also learned of deep brain stimulus (DBS) and saw firsthand how such a procedure could drastically reduce the effects of Parkinson’s. An awesome experience. Not only that, the doctor was continuously supportive and did not hesitate to teach. I cannot wait for another opportunity to accompany him.
For the first time since I’ve set out to do medicine, the hospital environment doesn’t seem so intimidating. A much more welcoming future home 😀
But I digress. Yay, 500th post!
