HALLOWEEN THANKSGIVING!

October 31, 2015

Canadian Thanksgiving landed on October 12th. However, due to busy work schedules, we decided to take the opportunity to celebrate together with Halloween!

It was quite a special occasion because Michael and I, for the first time in the history of our lives in Australia, bought and roasted a turkey. That’s right, a whole turkey! I’ve never even made the turkey at family thanksgiving meals before… but dang, it was a success!

Of course, we invited all our Canadian (and other) friends to share in some of the warmth.  The catch? Wear costumes as it’s obviously Halloween, and bring a little something to share!

Michael and I prepped, stuffed, and roasted a turkey – what.

Naps while the turkey was cooking 😛

We don’t know how it happened so well to be honest… so juicy and tender!

We also made some roasted potatoes, mashed potato and salads – coleslaw and diced tomato & cucumber. We absolutely could not find any fresh or frozen cranberries so after a bit of internet research – I attempted to make a cranberry sauce from Craisins. It was surprisingly, really good. I would definitely make it again!

For the first time in my life, I made stuffing from scratch… and it was good! I’ve learned the key spice to stuffing is sage – which is now a staple in my pantry. Growing we have always loved (and still do) Stove Top dressing, but homemade is pretty easy too!

And of course, can never miss dessert – whipped up apple danish logs and mini pecan pie muffins!

I thought our burglar costumes were pretty economical. Bought a striped shirt that I can wear on a regular basis and a toque from the Reject Shop (less than $5) with LED lights that could actually be useful in a power outage/camping situation!

Amanda came as a goth and I could not stop laughing at Kon’s – a Russian dressed as a Mexican 😛

Michael thanks you two again for his birthday gift! Those glasses were just perfect for him to enjoy with his collection of scotch!

Lisa was a gypsie/fortune teller and we happened to have just the prop she needed to complete her look – an LED ball.

Chuan came conveniently as himself, a Habs fan and his girlfriend Angela was obviously much more creative as Medusa!

The little minions of the gathering – Jess and Jin – we were impressed at their costume dedication.

Even their dog Cookie came dressed as a witch!

A third Canadian boy who was costume lazy and donned his Canadian gear – Garrett! Pei Yee was a vampire! Although I don’t have close up photos of her, she was a pretty one 😉 And there was one without a costume, I’m looking at you Bryan!

It was a night of gluttony, with many beers brought and consumed alongside some additional tasty food from everyone!

It was also Chuan’s birthday on November 3rd. He brought an ice cream cake for early celebration with everyone – hip, hip, hooray!

Hope everyone left stuffed – we sure were.

And the best thing about any Thanksgiving meal? Leftovers for days!
