Dinner one night at home: thit kho (braised pork) with bamboo and egg, greens and a mixture of different kinds of rice – very yummy!

Look how easy it is to do a bowel cancer screening test now, from the comfort of your own home with prepaid postage. Everyone over the age of 50, please get screened at least every 2 years! Very easy to get a kit, just ask your family doctor for one the next time you visit!

Absolutely delicious Mentai Tonkotsu Ramen (pork bone broth with roe, bamboo, soft boiled egg, sliced pork) with dumplings and Takikomi (fragrant Japanese styled rice)… lunch set for $15.50 at Wagaya! Yummy!

Lunch Date with Mike @ Gyoza Bar ANN

On Friday, we were able to get out of the hospital earlier than usual. That meant an opportunity for a late lunch date!

Gyoza Bar Ann had been on our list of places to try, specifically for their dumplings. We arrived a little after 2pm, loudly greeted at the door by very friendly and hospitable staff.

The lunch menu included Tower Lunch Boxes ($12 each), which of course, we each got. Each Lunch Box comes with steamed rice, a green salad and the choice of one out of 12 main dishes. 6 of the choices are gyoza (dumplings) and the other 6 vary from teriyaki, karaage, sashimi and tofu.

We missed the lunch rush 🙂 Lovely restaurant almost all to ourselves!

Without much deliberation, Mike chose the spicy gyoza (made with pork) and I chose the cheese gyoza (made with chicken).

And, since it was Friday, we got drinks! Asahi for Mike and a Chu-Hi Lychee cocktail for me 🙂

We didn’t have to wait long for the food, even though it says 10-15 minutes on the menu. Our dumplings came out on a sizzling hot plate with some onion and green beans. The staff brought over the gyoza sauce which we poured into the hotplate and let the flavours sizzle away for a minute more.

Rice was slightly overcooked but good flavours. Salad was fresh with a lovely dressing.

The dumplings were crisp with flavourful filling. My cheese gyoza also had tomato in it, added to the juiciness of the meat. Mike’s dumplings were oh-so-spicy – I couldn’t handle more than one.

A really nice experience, we will definitely come back to try different dishes soon!

Yum Cha at King of Kings

Yoni was in town last weekend, and since Mike and I had been craving some yum cha (or dim sum), we convinced Yoni to come with us to King of Kings.

We arrived before the restaurant even opened for dinner, so an empty restaurant and plenty of seating to choose from. The staff were extremely friendly and service was great! I I also enjoyed the music – relaxing instrumental tracks (Muzak) of popular songs, both really old and really new. Nice when you have a headache! 😉

The reason why we enjoy having Yum Cha at King of Kings is because it is available all day and is made to order. The menu was small with 16 items to choose from that cost around $7-8 each. It didn’t take us long to make up our minds, we went ahead and ordered 7 dishes. Although I just found out on their website that there’s a much more extensive menu available, we’ll have to find out when we can get those options.

Deep fried squid tentacles. This dish was generous but not as good as we’ve had before, I wish the batter was lighter and crispier.

Panfried pork bun. Tasty dumplings with large amounts of nicely seasoned pork filling.

Steamed BBQ pork bun. These buns were just okay, the filling was very gelatinous – too much flour added as filler.

Deep fried prawn dumplings. Nice and huge crispy dumplings with lots of flavoured shrimp filling. Would definitely get again. Really weird sauce… I don’t even know how to describe it.

Pan fried pork buns. Good sized buns with a tasty pork filling.

Deep fried glutinous buns. My favourite of the night, I always love these glutinous buns and these ones had a lovely savoury meat filling.

Steamed custard bun. Although the flavour was nice, the texture of the custard was too clumpy and dry, not the delicious creamy filling I was expecting.

We were given fortune cookies to end our meal. So whose fortune was better?

Total cost: $52 between 3 people – not bad! The quality of King of Kings yum cha is decent, although everything tastes much better when you are starving. Some of the dishes were really good and others were sub par. Would we come back again? Probably, because it’s so convenient from our house (less than 10 min bus ride). Although we’ve heard from many that Sunnybank is the place to go for dim sum so we’ll have to make our way down there one day!
