Malaysia House

More recently opened in Rockhampton, we highly recommend visiting Malaysia House for some tasty food!

It’s just a little more expensive than other Asian restaurants, but definitely good value and the food is always delicious. With a drinks menu, lots of seating room, and friendly service,  we have never left Malaysia House dissatisfied.

We have frequented the restaurant a number of times, including for takeaway – here are a few dishes from our visit with friends shortly after Christmas!

Laksa – Malaysian style curry, coconut mil, vegetables and rice noodles ($13.80-18.80)
Has been one of favourite noodle dishes since first trying it in Singapore – and this dish does it justice!

Golden Sands – deep fired in batter made from duck egg yolks ($20.80-24.80). This is my favourite dish at Malaysia House and I always recommend it to anyone who asks for suggestions. Salty, crunchy, and decadent, try both chicken and king prawn!

Assam Dish – fish or king prawn cooked in tangy tamarind sauce with fresh tomatoes, okra and onions ($20.80-22.80). I didn’t have this dish, but was told it wasn’t bad!

Angel hair king prawns – crispy king prawns in buttery egg floss and fresh curry leaves ($23.80) Tasty, but I still like Golden Sands more!

Roti Canai – traditional flat bread that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Served with curry dip and sambal paste ($3.00)

Char Kway Teow – wok fried flat rice noodles in spicy sambal and bean sprouts ($14.80) Love the wok flavour and never overdone!

SIN/KL 2014: Dinner at Gardens by Bay

After our visit to the domes at Gardens by the Bay, we walked around and enjoyed the nearby sights, including the Supertrees in daytime.

Here are a few facts regarding the Supertrees, taken from the Gardens by the Bay website:

  • These unique trees of up to 16 storeys in height can be found all around the Gardens – twelve at the Supertree Grove, while the remaining six are placed in clusters of threes at the Golden and Silver Gardens.
  • 11 Supertrees are embedded with environmentally sustainable functions like photovoltaic cells to harvest solar energy.
  • Supertrees are made of four parts: reinforcement concrete core, trunk, planting panels of the living skin, and canopy.
  • Over 162,900 plants comprising more than 200 species and varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns and tropical flowering climbers are planted on the Supertrees.
  • Garden Rhapsody – When night falls, watch as the Supertrees come alive with a dazzling myriad of light displays bursting across the sky.

At 6pm, we met with my Aunt Tam at Supertree Dining for a casual dinner and catching up! Aunt Tam grew up in Australia and is currently working in Singapore. Michael and I have been lucky, this is now the second time we’ve been able to meet up with her in Singapore!

We decided on dinner at Hill Street Coffee Shop, one of the numerous options within Supertree Dining. Other options include: American diner food, Italian and even Texas Chicken.

A simple but tasty dinner of satay, laksa and nasi lemak. Even better was the company 🙂

After dinner, we enjoyed the lit up Supertrees and there was even fake snow (in the form of little soap foam bubbles) within the large lit up castle-like structure! Everyone was loving and it was be the closest thing to snow we would enjoy this year 😛

Unfortunately, we couldn’t hang out too late. Aunt Tam had work the next morning, and we had an overnight train to catch to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

Lunch at Malaya Corner

With exams completed yesterday and Yoni in town, we decided to go out for lunch! Michael and I have passed by Malaya Corner multiple times and now were finally going to check it out.

First impression on entering: Malaya Corner is much more spacious than it looks on the outside. Brightly lit with plenty of dining room, I imagine it would be feasible to quickly get a table even during peak busy hours.

Started with drinks. Mike got a green tea bubble tea while I got a cold teh tarik. Both drinks were delicious although in hindsight, we probably didn’t need them alongside the massive amount of food.

Michael and I really enjoyed our Malaysian meals in Singapore and were looking forward to re-experiencing those delicious foods.

One of our newer favourite dishes is laksa, which is what Mike ordered – Malaysian Laksa ($16.90) hokkien noodles & vermicelli with fish cake, prawns, calamari, bean sprouts in coconut curry soup.

A humongous portion that was packed full of seafood in a delicious coconut based broth. He found it odd that there were 2 types of noodles and preferred the hokkien noodles. Although not a laksa connoisseur, he found it delicious and always brings back the good memories of having it for the first time in Singapore.

The other dish we’ve tried in the past is Nasi Lemak ($12.90), which is what Yoni chose. His dish consisted of Malaysian coconut rice with curry chicken, beef rendang, anchovies, egg, and pickled veggies. He found all the components of his dish quite tasty (except onions, because he’s not a fan of them) and finished his entire dish.

I got the Penang Char Keow Teow ($11.90) – stir fried ho-fun with prawns, calamari, fish cake, chinese sausage and bean sprouts. I’m a sucker when it comes to stir-fried broad, thick rice noodles. This was delicious generous amounts of seafood. However, I did find the noodles slightly overdone and the dish overall too greasy.

We thought it would be a good idea to get a 4th dish to share: Yeung Chow fried rice ($10.90) with shrimp, BBQ pork, chinese sausage, and egg.

Yummy! But overall bad idea. It was actually really tasty but there was so much food! One common denominator to all 4 dishes: the monstrous portions.  So many leftovers to take home, haha!

Friendly service, great menu including many drinks, delicious food with enormous portions – would definitely return with more friends!

Day 06: Singapore – Delicious lunch @ Hill Street Coffee Shop

[ARGH! I had just written this entire blog post when WordPress glitched on me and I lost the whole thing!]

Mike and I took a much needed break in between visiting the conservatories for some lunch!

After walking around and checking out all the eating establishments at Gardens by the Bay, we decided on Supertree Dining – a complex of restaurants offering a multitude of dishes from all over the world. Oh, and the view of the Supertrees while you’re dining is pretty nice too I must say!

The dining space is quite lovely with softly glowing abstract Supertrees.

After looking at all the options, we decided to dine at Hill Street Coffee Shop. It not only had enticing menu items but also a lunch special! 2 mains and 2 drinks for $15… not bad!

We were shown to our booth by the window where we sat, chatted, and wondered awkwardly when we would receive our menus. All the staff happened to be temporarily in the kitchen, so we picked up the newspapers on our table to pass the time.

And then we laughed. Because the newspapers were the menus! Clever guys, very clever. And very neat.

We soon made up our minds and placed our orders.

We started with drinks while waiting for our food to come out. The options we had were either kopi (coffee sweetened with condensed milk) or teh (tea sweetened with condensed milk). Mike enjoyed a kopi while I had a teh – reminiscent of all the Cha Yen (similar tea drink) I had in Bangkok.

Mike decided on a dish we’ve been meaning to but haven’t tried yet, the Traditional Singapore Laksa – spicy curry and coconut milk based broth with thick vermicelli, cockles, prawns, fried tofu, chicken, bean sprouts, sliced egg and fish cake. Mmm, an instant favourite between us! Nom nom nom!

I chose the Crispy Fried Lemongrass Marinated Chicken Nasi Lemak. Fragrant rice cooked with coconut cream and served on a banana leaf (and newspapers) with a number of sides: crispy fried chicken, roasted peanuts, sambal (hot spicy sauce), acar (pickled vegetables), cucumber slices, ikan bilis (small fried anchovies) and a pieces of seafood-flavoured-crisps I couldn’t identify. The chicken was delicately crispy, flavourful and so juicy! Combination of flavours and textures were excellent! We’d never had Nasi Lemak before, but it too became an instant favourite!

Edit: We actually did try nasi lemak a few days before at Bugis Market with Xuan… it wasn’t very good though. This was great!

With happy bellies, we proceeded back to Cloud Forest to continue on our conservatory adventure!
