Last night in Brisbane: Eat Street Markets!

November 16, 2013

Continuing on with my previous post!

I know, I’m so behind.

After Kristen’s baby shower earlier in the day, we decided to meet up at Eat Street Markets later for dinner – also a last chance for me to hang out with everyone before going home to Canada!

Unfortunately, Michael wasn’t a part of this gathering because he had to stay home to sell his iPad, and the girl never showed up! How annoying! At least Yoni was over so he didn’t have to spend his night in Brisbane alone, haha.

Christine picked me up at 6pm and we got there in time to meet Kristen, Matt, Fiona and her friend Amy for dinner – yum!

What is Eat Street Markets? I didn’t know either!

It’s a newly opened (and hopefully permanent) night market at the old decommissioned Hamilton Wharf. Around 80 shipping containers, although I suspect more will be added as time goes by, have been transformed to bright and alluring stalls selling food from all over the world, textiles, art, fresh produce, jewellery, and more!

You can read more about it at The Weekend Edition and at Must Do Brisbane.

Two huge ‘starry night’ tents lined entirely with amazing food stalls. Very reasonable prices too!

Yum, food and friends 🙂

And plenty other stalls!

Sending our love to a friend who wasn’t able to make it.

Lovely atmosphere and as with any market, plenty of unique things to see!

There were even fireworks at the end of the night, although I’m pretty sure they were unrelated to Eat Street Markets.

Had a great night, especially hanging out with everyone! Hopefully Mike will have a chance to go when we are back in Brisbane!

Burritos and Zombies

A group of us went to for burritos at Guzman y Gomez in South Bank. Food was cheap and yummy, although I definitely recommend the burritos over the quesadillas!

So serious, unwrapping burritos takes a lot of concentration!

We followed that with World War Z, which we all (genuinely) enjoyed. No comparing to the book! It was just a really entertaining and fast paced movie that had a number of humourous moments. Go see it if you want a night of fun!

And of course, we had to end the night with 1/2 off waffles at Gelare!

Fun night with friends! 🙂

Savoyards: Phantom of the Opera

Mike and I had the pleasure of joining Christine and Fiona last night to watch Savoyards’ production of Phantom of the Opera at Iona Performing Arts Centre.

IMG_4672

The production opened on May 25, 2013 and it is not only the Queensland premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most popular work, but also the second amateur production of the musical in the world.”

What an amazing night! The show was 2.5 hours long with a 20 minutes intermission.

“With a cast of 52 and a 27 piece orchestra, it is one of the largest productions Savoyards have ever mounted in their 52 year history and will play for 14 performances.”

If not for our dear friend Roger playing the organ/keyboard in the orchestra (who did an awesome job by the way!), I wouldn’t have known or thought of attending.

I had never seen Phantom of the Opera before and for others who don’t know the story:

“Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, is a darkly romantic musical about a mysterious “Opera Ghost” who inspires a young singer, has become a legend, drawing standing-room audiences throughout the world.  With unforgettable songs such as “The Music of the Night”, All I Ask of You”, Masquerade” and of course, the title song, this will be a night at the theatre that you won’t easily forget.”

The main characters, Phantom and Christine Daae played by Lionel Theunissen and Monique Latemore, respectively, were definitely stars of the show. A wonderful, talented cast with great music, amazing costumes and beautiful sets.

What a great night out! Dressed up with awesome company, a delicious dinner at Absolute Thai, a night of amazing musical talent!
